FAQ

What makes Evolution different from other raw brands?

At Evolution Raw Pet Food, we're proud to do things a little differently. We're a family-owned Saskatchewan business built on a genuine passion for animal nutrition, quality ingredients, and doing right by our customers.

Locally Sourced, Canadian Made

Supporting local isn't just a marketing statement for us. We're deeply committed to working with Saskatchewan farmers, Canadian producers, and businesses within our own communities. We prioritize locally sourced ingredients whenever possible and believe in knowing exactly where our food comes from.

Small-Batch Manufacturing

Unlike large-scale manufacturers, we produce our food in small batches at our own facility in Saskatoon. This gives us greater oversight of our ingredients, production processes, and finished products. We believe quality should never be sacrificed for quantity.

Science-Backed Nutrition

Our recipes are developed with the expertise of qualified canine and feline nutrition professionals, including veterinary nutritional expertise. We formulate our complete diets to NRC nutritional standards, ensuring our approach is grounded in nutritional science rather than trends.

Food Safety & Transparency

We take pathogen risk management seriously. From bacteriophage technology and batch pathogen testing to comprehensive daily sanitation, HACCP-trained employees, and full lot traceability, we've built multiple layers of preventive measures into our manufacturing process.

We believe customers deserve transparency about how their pet's food is made, not just what's printed on the label.

Quality Without Unnecessary Markups

We believe high-quality nutrition should be accessible. As a family business, we work hard to balance premium ingredients, responsible manufacturing, fair wages, and reasonable pricing. Our Apex line is one example of how we're making complete raw nutrition more economical for large dogs and multi-dog households.

A Company That Stands Behind Its Products

We're not a faceless corporation. We're a family, a team, and fellow animal lovers who genuinely care about the pets eating our food. We stand behind our products with a 100% satisfaction guarantee because we believe customers should feel confident in what they're feeding.

At the end of the day, Evolution is more than a pet food brand. It's our family's commitment to producing food we're proud to put in your pet's bowl — with the quality, transparency, and care we'd expect for our own animals.

What size are the patties?

All of our regular Evolution Raw recipes come in convenient ¼ lb (4 oz) patties, making portioning and feeding simple for dogs and cats of all sizes.

  • 8 lb box: 32 patties
  • 18 lb box: 72 patties

Our Apex line is designed with large dogs and multi-dog households in mind, featuring larger ½ lb (8 oz) patties for easier feeding and less time spent portioning meals.

Whether you're feeding a small companion or a household full of big dawgs, we've made it easy to serve fresh, balanced nutrition without the hassle of weighing every meal.

Why does the colour or texture vary?

Because we're working with real, minimally processed ingredients, natural variations in colour, texture, and consistency are completely normal!

Just like the meat you purchase at the grocery store, no two batches of raw food will look exactly alike. Factors such as the animal's diet, age, fat content, and natural differences in muscle and organ meats can all influence the appearance of the finished product.

Our recipes also contain fresh fruits, vegetables, and organ meats, which can contribute to subtle differences in colour and texture from batch to batch.

At Evolution, we produce our food in small batches using carefully selected ingredients. While we follow consistent recipes and strict quality control procedures, we don't use artificial colours or unnecessary additives to make every batch look identical.

Natural variation is part of working with real food.

Can I cook raw pet food?

Absolutely! While not all raw pet food is suitable for cooking, we offer several recipes that can be safely cooked.

We understand that raw feeding isn't for everyone. Whether you're concerned about potential pathogens, have a picky eater who prefers warm meals, or simply feel more comfortable serving cooked food, we believe you should have options.

Our cookable recipes include:

  • Bison
  • Lamb
  • Beef
  • Adult Complete – Poultry Free
  • Feline Complete

These recipes are made without ground bone, making them suitable for cooking. Gently cooking food to a safe internal temperature can help reduce the risk of harmful bacteria while still providing a fresh, meat-based meal.

Important: Not all of our recipes can be cooked. Recipes containing ground bone should always be served raw, as cooking bones can change their structure and create safety concerns. Always choose a recipe specifically identified as cookable and follow the recommended cooking instructions.

Cooking can also change certain nutrient levels, so nutritional completeness after cooking should be confirmed for the specific recipe.

Whether you choose raw or cooked, our goal is the same: making fresh, high-quality nutrition accessible to more pets and their families.

Can I feed both raw and kibble?

Absolutely! Raw feeding doesn't have to be all or nothing. We believe that adding fresh, nutrient-rich food to your pet's diet is a positive step, even if you're not ready to make the switch to 100% raw.

Whether you're adding a few raw patties to your pet's regular kibble, alternating between raw and dry meals, or feeding a combination of both, there's no need to choose one over the other.

Incorporating raw food can add moisture, high-quality animal proteins, and naturally occurring nutrients to your pet's diet. Even small additions can help introduce more variety and fresh ingredients into their meals.

We understand that every household has different needs, budgets, and lifestyles. Our philosophy is simple: feed the best diet you can comfortably afford. You don't have to feed exclusively raw to make meaningful improvements to your pet's nutrition.

When combining foods, remember to adjust portions to avoid overfeeding and ensure your pet's overall diet remains nutritionally balanced.

A little fresh food is better than none. Every bowl is an opportunity to feed better.

How do I switch my pet to raw?

Switching your pet to raw food doesn't have to be complicated! Unlike transitioning between kibble brands, raw feeding doesn't necessarily require a gradual introduction. Many healthy dogs and cats can switch directly to a balanced raw diet without any issues.

Making the Switch

For pets that are eager to try something new, you can simply replace their current food with their new raw meals. There's no need to gradually mix in small amounts over several days unless your pet benefits from a slower transition.

Some dogs and cats, however, are creatures of habit. Pets that are accustomed to the same food, texture, or smell may be hesitant to try something unfamiliar. For these pets, a gradual introduction can make the transition easier.

Tips for Picky Eaters

  • Start by offering a small amount of raw food alongside their current meals.
  • Gradually increase the amount of raw food as your pet becomes more comfortable.
  • Try different proteins to discover which flavours your pet prefers.
  • For cats especially, patience is important. Some may take longer to accept a new texture or temperature.
  • Never starve your pet into accepting a new food. Cats in particular should not go extended periods without eating.

Prefer to Serve It Cooked?

We understand that raw feeding isn't for everyone! That's why some of our recipes are also suitable for cooking, giving pet owners more flexibility in how they feed.

Whether your pet prefers their meals raw or gently cooked, we're committed to providing high-quality, thoughtfully formulated nutrition. Just be sure to choose one of our recipes specifically identified as safe to cook, as recipes containing ground bone should never be cooked.

What to Expect

Some pets may experience temporary changes in stool consistency or frequency when switching diets. Monitor your pet's appetite, digestion, and overall comfort, and adjust the transition pace as needed.

Pets with sensitive digestive systems or existing health conditions may benefit from a slower transition with veterinary guidance.

Every pet is different. Whether you switch overnight, take your time, or choose a cookable recipe, the goal is to make feeding fresh food a positive experience for both you and your pet.

Safe raw handling tips

At Evolution Raw Pet Food, we believe that safe food handling is an important part of responsible raw feeding. Just like handling raw meat for your own family, proper storage, preparation, and hygiene help keep both you and your pets safe.

Raw pet food can naturally contain bacteria. Following a few simple food safety practices can help reduce the risk of cross-contamination and ensure your pet's meals are handled responsibly.

Storage & Thawing

  • Keep raw food frozen until ready to use.
  • Thaw in the refrigerator, never on the countertop or at room temperature.
  • Store thawed food in a sealed container on the bottom shelf of your refrigerator, away from human food.
  • Use thawed food within 24–48 hours, provided it has remained refrigerated at 4°C or below.
  • Never leave raw food sitting at room temperature for extended periods.

Preparation & Serving

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before and after handling raw pet food.
  • Use dedicated utensils, cutting boards, and preparation surfaces whenever possible.
  • Wash and sanitize food bowls, utensils, countertops, and any surfaces that come into contact with raw food after every use.
  • Serve meals promptly and discard any uneaten food rather than leaving it out.
  • Avoid washing raw meat, as splashing water can spread bacteria.

Keeping Your Household Safe

Raw pet food should be handled with the same care as any other raw animal product.

Our Commitment to Quality

At Evolution, we take pride in preparing our recipes in small batches with careful attention to ingredient sourcing, cleanliness, and production practices. We believe that responsible manufacturing and proper handling at home go hand in hand.

Quality begins with us. Safe handling continues at home.

Our Sourcing Standards

At Evolution Raw Pet Food, we're deeply passionate about supporting local. As a family-owned Saskatchewan business, we believe in investing in the farmers, producers, and communities around us. Supporting Canadian agriculture isn't just something we talk about — it's a fundamental part of how we operate.

We prioritize sourcing our ingredients from Saskatchewan and Canadian suppliers whenever possible, building relationships with producers who share our commitment to quality, responsible practices, and transparency.

We believe that knowing where your ingredients come from matters. That's why we're selective about the suppliers we work with, choosing quality ingredients from trusted sources rather than simply opting for the lowest price.

When an ingredient can't be sourced locally, we carefully consider its origin, quality, and the standards of the supplier behind it. Every ingredient has a purpose, and every sourcing decision is made with the same goal: providing pets with safe, nutritious, high-quality food.

We're proud to support the people who grow and raise our food, and even prouder to bring those ingredients together in products made right here in Saskatchewan.
